Knox County swept their first Tri-Rivers Conference varsity twin bill of the 2009-10 basketball season at Brookfield.
The Lady Eagles (3-2, 1-0) scored 30 of their 47 points in the paint and added eight more at the charity stripe, posting a 47-39 win. Knox County took advantage of Brookfield shooting woes and jumped out to an 18-5 second quarter lead. The Lady Bulldogs (4-2, 0-1) scored six quick points in the final three minutes of the first half and closed within six points.
Knox County did a good job of exploiting their height advantage. The tallest Brookfield girl listed is 5'8" Alexis Tollerton. Brookfield beat Kansas City St. Pius X by 12 points to win the Hillsboro Tournament earlier in the season. The Lady Eagles maintained their seven to eight point edge with good free stretch throw shooting and solid rebounding.
Lorrie Peters led three KC players in double figures with a 14 point 16 rebound effort. Becca Mallett and Katie Ausmus added ten KCHS points each. Quinsie Gall led Brookfield with 14 points. Alyssa Elson added nine Lady Bulldog points.
Brookfield had no answer for 6'5" center Justin Reeves in the boys match up. Reeves scored 30 points and pulled down 17 rebounds in a 77-61 victory. The Eagles (3-2, 1-0) showed considerable improvement from their previous contest at Marion County. Brookfield could not find the twine in either game.
The Bulldogs worked open for perimeter shots, but could not convert. Knox County sank eight three pointers to five for the home team. The Eagles looked to pull away several times in the first half. Brookfield cashed in KCHS turnovers and remained within a 42-34 Knox County half time lead.
Knox County took better care of the ball and hit the boards hard in the second half. Brookfield missed chance after chance to score. Justin Reeves scored over and through three Bulldog defenders on one second half play. Knox County played well as a team, dishing out 24 assists.
Tristan Lonberger backed up Justin Reeves' game high 30 points with a 12 point, five assist and four steal effort. Keenan Gillaspy buried three, three pointers in the first quarter and finished with 11 points. Brookfield shadowed Gillaspy defensively, holding Knox County's senior sniper scoreless the rest of the night.
