The #18 ranked Quincy University men's basketball team stormed back from an 11 point deficit against Saint Joseph's College and force overtime but was unable to secure the team's 20th win of the season and clinch the Great Lakes Valley Conference North Division.
Saint Joseph's opened the game with a 5-0 run behind a lay-up from Jake Hassler and a three from Michael Horton. However the Hawks rallied back to score the next nine points, with three's from Justin Brock and Billy Baptist. Saint Joseph's took the lead back minutes later and opened up an 11 point lead late in the first-half. The Pumas went into half-time up 37-30 as they shot 53-percent in the half.
The Hawks still trailed by nine points with 6:17 remaining in the second-half when they made their push. A three by Mookie Pierre got the Hawks started and Quincy then hit five straight free-throws, two from Billy Baptist and three by Courtney Belger, to pull to within one point at 56-55 with 4:06 on the clock. During their run Quincy limited Saint Joseph's to no points over a 3:33 span.
The Hawks cut the score to three points on a lay-up by Justin Brock with 1:09 left and tied the score on a three by Baptist with 22-seconds remaining. Saint Joseph's missed a final attempt in regulation as the game went into overtime tied at 60-60.
Quincy took a 65-62 lead with 1:38 left in overtime behind free-throws from Baptist and a three from Brock. The Pumas answered back with a lay-up and forced a Hawk turnover with just one-minute left. The Pumas then took the lead on a three by Helmer and never looked back. Quincy connected on just one of their final three shot attempts as they fell 70-67 to the Pumas.
Billy Baptist led the Hawks with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Brock added 15 points and Tyler Burke finished with 12 points. Quincy falls to 19-4 overall and 10-4 in the GLVC. They return to action on Saturday on the road against the University of Illinois-Springfield.
