The IHSA is opposing proposed legislation that would allow a local school board to have a waiver for kids to play football without their 12 days of practice if they had to miss those practices because of military training. I for one know that CSE had a couple of kids that had to miss games last year because they didn't have enough practices because they had been at basic training. Look, I understand the IHSA's reasoning that you need to have practices before playing football, but I would argue that if you're in good enough shape to complete basic training, then you are in good enough shape to play football.
The IHSA's argument is related to heat related injuries. I feel like that argument is moot because a heat related injury could happen to any one at any time. The person in the best condition in the world could overheat at a practice if they aren't given enough breaks and water. I just think the IHSA is afraid that some of the local school boards may try to bend this rule to apply to other situations. There's an easy solution to that worry, make sure your waiver is for basic training and ONLY basic training.
