Eighth ranked Macon pulled away from Palmyra in the second half to win the boy's championship of the 38th Annual Highland Tournament. The first place games were played on Wednesday, January 13. The Tigers (10-1) jumped out to an 11-4 lead. The Panthers (4-9) clawed back to within a one to three point deficit most of the second period. Macon led 20-16 at intermission.
A strong Macon press and offensive boards pushed the Tiger margin to as many as 17 points in the third period. Macon took advantage of Palmyra turnovers for a ten point surge to a 35-20 lead with 4:10 remaining in the third. Palmyra cut the deficit to 11 points at the 4:20 mark of the fourth quarter.
Macon full court pressure lifted the Tiger advantage to 59-39 with three minutes to play in the game. Macon won going away. The final score was the largest margin of the night. Robert Freeman led Macon with 20 points.
Macon fired in six three balls during the first half of the girls' championship game. None of the Tigerette home run tries found the twine the rest of the game. Sophomore Lexie Wilt sank two South Shelby free throws with 20 seconds to play in the game, lifting eighth ranked South Shelby to a 46-45 victory.
South Shelby turnovers and Macon home run balls forged an 18-10 Macon lead after eight minutes. The Tigerettes (9-3) scored most of their first half points from the perimeter. Tenth ranked Macon had problems penetrating tall South Shelby defenders most of the contest. The Tigerette's inability to get quality shots, especially in the third quarter was a key determining factor.
South Shelby (8-0) turned the ball over too many times in period two. Shelby Arnold nailed a Macon three for a 23-10 lead with 6:49 remaining in the first half. Macon held a 13 point lead when Arielle Gough drained a 15 footer at the buzzer, trimming the Macon lead to 30-19 at the half.
South Shelby took the ball to the hole and scored the first nine points of the third quarter. The Lady Birds outscored Macon 13-5 in the third period for a 35-32 Macon lead at the three quarter pole. The fourth quarter was a two to three point affair until the final two minutes.
Jenna Mueller pulled South Shelby within a point at the 2:20 mark of the final quarter. The lead changed hands five times in the final couple of minutes. Macon forward Audrey Thrasher answered a Jill Barry bucket with 32 seconds to play in the game for a 45-44 Tigerette lead.
Lexie Wilt was fouled on an offensive rebound and sank a pair of Lady Bird free throws for the lead. Macon worked for a good three point look for the win. Jill Rowland's shot rang off the rim with 1.4 seconds to play in the game.
In Monday, January 11 Highland Tournament action Canton topped Palmyra 60-45 for the girls' third place trophy. Forward Kindra Henze led all scorers with 21 Palmyra points. Taylor Baxter was in double figures for the 5-7 Lady Panthers with ten points.
Canton (6-3, ranked tenth in girl's Class 2) led 31-13 at intermission. Jessi Logsdon led three Lady Tigers in double figures with 18 points. Tori Niemann tossed in 16 and Aron Taylor added 12 Canton points.
Highland opened up a four point game with a 22-14 run in the fourth quarter for a 71-59 victory over Canton (4-5) in the boy's third place contest. Dallas Job led five Cougars in double figures with 16 points. Senior Lindsey McDowell scored 15 Highland points. Ten McDowell points came in the fourth quarter. Michael Scoggin scored 11 points. Garin Smith and Tyree Clay fired in ten points each.
Colt Carper earned game scoring honors with 27 Canton points. Steffen Simmons drove home 16 Tiger points. Carper and Simmons scored all of Canton's 14 final period points.
