Lost their first game to Liberty, which is on the whig page, and Saturday's doubleheader with Western was cancled. I don't know much about Liberty baseball. Maybe they are improved, but giving up 9 runs to them when throwing two of your better pitchers probably isn't a good sign for WH. That being said, it's only one game, so we'll see what happens.

Right , it is only the first game and they did score 8 runs. Have they played since then?

wolverine55

I believe they were able to get in a JV game last week, which the Titans won, but nothing else on the varsity level.

The Titans did beat South Fulton 9-6 yesterday to improve to 1-1. It sounds like A LOT of underclassmen are getting quality playing time for the Titans this year. Freshmen Blake Whittler had the key hit for West Hancock.

I believe that sophomores Austin Hardy and Paxton Harmon anchor the pitching staff, also.....

wolverine55

Yep, they are two of the better all-around players too, I believe. I'll have to do some fishing around and see if I can find a roster, but I don't believe any of the names I've read in the first two game write-ups on the Titans have been seniors. May not bode well for this year, but hopefully it will for the future.

I heard through the grapevine that WH swept Payson in a home doubleheader today. Collin Dooley had three homeruns combined in the two games, but don't know the scores. To confirm previous talk about the Titans' youth, I also heard WH didn't have a single senior in the starting lineup for either game.

There hasn't been much to report with the weather, but the Titans are now 6-4. Last week, they only played one game, which was a 5-2 victory over West Prairie with sophomore Paxton Harmon getting the victory. Last night, WH beat BPCA 1-O with senior Dillon Huston getting the W. I believe Huston is the only senior giving the Titans significant playing time. Weather-permitting, the Titans play CSE at home Wednesday, at Rushville Thursday, and then host a double header with Pittsfield on Saturday of this week.

The weather has been terrible lately for spring baseball. I sometimes don't know how they get any games in. With all the rain Predicted for this week , even if they get to play, their field won't be in great condition.

The Titans have played twice since my last posting--beating Rushville in a game that got Duerr's call of the week last week and a win over WP earlier this week. Not sure what the weekend schedule looks like for the Titans, but believe it or not, rain is projected in the forecast for tomorrow...

wolverine55
05-06-2011, 03:11 PM
Yep, they also got rolled by QND last night, but I believe they are 1O-6 overall playing against a fairly competitive schedule. The only teams who have really beaten them badly are QND, who beats a lot of teams by wide margins, and the second game with IW, who is also a pretty good team.

wolverine55
05-10-2011, 01:39 PM
WH beat Unity last night 1O-O to improve to 11-6. Sophomore Paxton Harmon was the winning pitcher and I believe he also had a big day at the plate to help his own cause.

Though the baseball threads don't get much action on here, I'm going to try and do a better job of keeping this one going this year. Here is the Titans schedule for the upcoming season:

3/20: JV at CSE

3/22: Home vs. Liberty

3/24: Home vs. Western--Varsity DH

3/29: Home vs. South Fulton

3/31: Away vs. Payson--Varsity DH

4/2: Home vs. West Central

4/3: Home vs. Unity

4/4 Home vs. QND--JV-only DH

4/5: Away vs. IW

4/7: Home vs. G-P--Varsity DH

4/11: Home vs. WP

4/16: Away vs. BPC/A

4/18: Away vs. CSE

4/19: Home vs. Rushville/Industry

4/21: Away vs. Pittsfield--Varsity DH

4/25: Away vs. WP

4/26: Away vs. South Fulton

4/30: Home vs. IW

5/3: Away vs. QND

5/7: Away vs. Unity

5/8: Away vs. Brown County

5/10: Away Liberty

5/11: Home vs. CSE

5/14: Regionals begin.

The Titans only had one senior on last year's team so a plethora of experience returns. I don't know what IW, Macomb, or QND return this season but it should be the usual names/programs battling it out for top baseball team in the IL portion of the area.

It would be nice if baseball become a more talked about topic on here! Baseball is by far my favorite sport. But high school baseball from a spectator standpoint obviously isn't viewed nearly like football and basketball.. Wolverine I remember having your father as my junior high baseball coach in Warsaw. Always wished he would've been our high school coach also. Definitely learned more from him about the game of baseball then from probably every other coach I had combined!

As far as West Hancock is concerned they do seem to have quite a bit of talent returning to their roster.. Kids like Collin Dooley, Paxton Harmon,Kendall Summers,Kody Knoche all have loads of talent.. I've had the opportunity to coach a few of these kids in the small little hancock county summer softball league that consists of warsaw, basco, sutter, rockford, and denver. And I was highly impressed by some of the kids on this team. There is a ton of baseball talent and hopefully they can reach their potential and have alot of success this season!

Pretty sure Knipe is only a Sophomore, so that's a pretty good effort for him. I think the Titans have a pretty full schedule this week, and that's why Hardy or Harmon didn't pitch.

oldviking

Knipe had good speed, at times, and threw a lot of strikes and did not have many walks. He was in the game until he gave up a two run homer. He also drove in a run to make the score 5 to 3. I agree that he has a lot of potential if he keeps playing , as a player and as a pitcher. IMO

Would be pretty awesome to see the Titans win a baseball regional and certainly are one of the favorites in the regional. With the way the regional is, WH should be able to set up their rotation to throw Austin Hardy in probably the regional semifinal and then if they advance, throw Paxton Harmon in the regional final.

G/P 3 WH 2 last regular season game. Does anyone know if this game counted as a conference game? Anyway, next game WH vs IW on 5/16 Regional semifinal at Macomb 2nd game around 7pm.

Really good season for the Titans, big bummer they lost to IW though. I think Hardy pitched one more inning that he should have. Listened to some on the radio and the Titans scored 2 early but couldn't do much after. Hardy pitched 5 good innings but you could tell he was lucky to get out of the 5th inning with a big strikeout on Bastert with a couple guys on. I would still like to know how these guys got a number 2 seed instead of the 1. I know it may seem silly now to discuss it, but at the time of seedings the Titans were 16-4 I think, and Macomb 19-10 or 19-11, not even close to the same record. The Titans had then beat everyone on their schedule except QND, losing 7-6 in a close one. My guess is coaches were supposed to go to the meeting and help seed the regional which leaves me to my next thought that Purchatzke possibly didn't attend the meeting and that's why the Titans slipped into that #2 spot.

If WH couldn't beat the 3 seed, why would you think WH could beat a 2 seed, if WH were the 1 seed? And if a woodchuck could chuck wood..... Regardless WH couldn't beat a lower seed, and WH couldn't take care it's own business.

My guess on the seeding is that Macomb played a tougher schedule and the majority of their losses at the time of the seeding came from WB6 schools like RI, Moline, Galesburg, UT and also Metamora I believe. If you take away those losses the records of WH and Macomb are very similar. In the end it doesn't really matter you have to beat the best if you want to make a deep run in the postseason anyway. Great season for WH, and good luck to IW and Macomb on Saturday, hopefully the winner can make a deep run.

They did beat the 3 seed, 9-0 in fact, just not last night. Had they been the #1 seed, they would have played CSE last night instead of Illini West. They also split with CSE, winning the second matchup 12-3 I think.

Tougher schedule shouldn't give that much towards getting a #1 seed though. If that were the case, QND boys basketball would have been #1 seed by far in the boys 2A regional in Beardstown, and every year because they play the toughest schedule in the area by far. Does anyone happen to know some common opponents WH & Macomb had by chance? I know they both played CSE and both went 1-1 against them, but anyone else?

Looking at the schedules common opponents for WH and Macomb were CSE, IW, Rushville, Bushnell, and West Prairie. Out of those teams, Macomb lost only to CSE. Looking at the schedules there is no doubt that Macomb played a much tougher schedule than WH.

If the two teams don't play each other, then strength of schedule and common opponents is the only way to compare the two teams. At the time of seeding Macomb hadn't lost to CSE so Macomb had beaten all the common opponents and the majority of their losses were to teams that were much better then any team on WH's schedule, and I don't mean to offend WH or anyone else by saying that. I thought either WH or Macomb could have gotten the #1 seed depending on the emphasis of strength of schedule. How can you punish a team for playing a tough schedule?

As for the QND should get the #1 seed every year in basketball isn't true because they play IW, Macomb and WH therefore head to head becomes a key element when it comes to seeding, over the strength of schedule.

A a Titan fan , it doesn't really bother me who got the number # 1 seed. If a team is good enough, the seed doesn't matter. The Titans' season is over for this year. The post season game between the Chargers and Titans was a great game . Unfortunately, my team lost. Good luck to IW against Macomb.
