The weather plagued Highland Tournament played four championship semi-final contests on Saturday. Macon will take on South Shelby for the girls' championship. The Tigers will challenge Palmyra for the boys' title. Highland and Canton vie for the boy's third place trophy while Canton and Palmyra go for the girls' third place award.
Third place games are scheduled for Monday, January 11. Championship contests are slated for Wednesday, January 13. The boy's games will tip off at 6PM, followed by the girls' contests at 7:30PM each night.
The 38th Annual Highland Tournament got their first round games in on January 4-5. The next three scheduled days were postponed due to inclement weather. Consolation bracket games have been cancelled. First round girl's results were fourth seeded Palmyra over Clark County 42-25. Second seeded Canton blasted seventh seed Monroe City 81-23. Third ranked Macon topped sixth seeded Highland (score not available). South Shelby was the top girls' seed.
Fourth seed Highland defeated five seed South Shelby 62-26 in boys' first round action. Second seed Canton topped Monroe City 51-41. Sixth seeded Palmyra upended three seed Clark County 49-35. Macon was the boys' one seed.
In championship semi-final play, upset minded Palmyra grabbed an 11-4 lead over state ranked South Shelby early in the second quarter. The Lady Birds (6-0) pressured Palmyra (5-6) into second quarter turnovers, and outscored the Lady Panthers 13-7 in the second period. South Shelby led 17-16 at intermission.
All stater Jenna Mueller made a pair of key fourth quarter plays, helping favored South Shelby escape with a 39-35 victory. Palmyra was down 37-35 with the ball at the 13 second mark. Coach Milly Rash made good use of two fouls to give, trimming the clock to five seconds. The Lady Panthers threw the ball away on an inbound play sealing their fate. Taylor Baxter scored a game high 11 Palmyra points. Britne Wheeler was in double figures for the Lady Panthers with ten points.
Kayla Harvey and Jill Barry led South Shelby with eight points each Jenna Mueller added six Lady Bird points while Ashley Troyer tossed in seven.
The state ranked match of Canton and Macon lived up to it's billing. This might have been the best Northeast Missouri high school basketball game of the season to date.
The Tigerettes jumped out to a 38-23 half time lead. Kristyn Caldwell tied the game at 71 with a Canton three late in the game. Emily Rudkin sank a free throw with no time showing on the clock for the 72-71 win.
Macon won the contest on the charity stripe figuratively and literally. Canton (6-3) sank 3-6 fourth quarter free throws while Macon was 7-9 in the final eight minutes from the line. Macon sank 20 of 27 free throw attempts while Canton was 14 of 27 at the line.
Emily Rudkin and Shelby Arnold scored 18 Macon points each. Audrey Thrasher was in double figures for the Tigerettes with 15. Tori Niemann poured in a game high 22 Canton points. Kristyn Caldwell scored 19 points while Jessi Logsdon tallied 18. Aron Taylor was the fourth Lady Tiger in double figures with ten points.
Palmyra (4-8) rode a pair of 20 plus scoring performances to a 63-58 win over Canton. The Tigers (4-4) sprang to a ten point first quarter lead, only to see the Panthers respond with a 19-8 run in the second period. Blayne White hammered home a game high 28 Panther points. Austin Hinkle tossed in 22 Palmyra points.
Colt Carper led Canton with 22 points. Steffen Simmons was in double figures for Canton with 15 points.
