Published reports suggest Mark DeRosa will sign with San Francisco today. Two year $12 million contract. This one may hurt the Cardinals worse than any free agent defections. DeRosa is a prototype Tony LaRussa player. Good offensive player that can play multiple postions.

If the Cards can't sign Matt Holiday, I would rather see the organization go with their own home grown talent than overpay for journeymen. If Scott Boras can get more than $16 million for Holiday, I would take the first round draft choice and move on. Same goes for DeRosa.

Chris Perez was the only player the Cards gave up in late 2009 trades they might live to regret. Brett Wallace may have been drafted for trade bait. Wallace and power hitting Redbird prospect Allen Craig very similiar players.

Until the 2009 draft, St. Louis was famous for drafting players they could sign rather than take real major league prospects. Hopefully Cards will make good use of three first round draft choices this summer assuming Matt Holiday does not reup.

Looks like it is a done deal:

I for one am not torn up about this one.

I REALLY want to see them sign Holliday, who is MUCH younger and a bigger bat... but I don't want to give up the franchise for him. Still, I want to get as many horses in the barn while Albert is in his prime and in St. Louis... neither of which is guaranteed after 2011.
