Quincy started the game strong, taking an 18-5 lead with a pair of three
pointers from Josh Edmonds and a third from Mookie Pierre. Mesa State
closed the score to 37-33 with just over one-minute left in the first
half but a three from Billy Hayes stopped the Mavericks run and Quincy
took a 42-36 lead into the break.
Mesa State took their first lead since the game's opening points when
Justin Ashbaugh scored to make the score 49-47 with 15:06 remaining.
However the Hawks responded with a three from Tyler Burke on their next
trip down and never trailed in the contest again. The key series in the
game came with just seven-minutes left when Mesa State had closed to
within four points. The Hawks defense rose to the occasion and swatted
back to back shots, with Pierre and Billy Baptist recording the blocks.
Quincy shot 48-percent from the floor as a team, including 54-percent in
the first-half. Josh Edmonds led the way for Quincy with 18 points while
Pierre and Brock each added 13 points and Baptist finished with 11
points. Quincy improves to 10-0 on the season, tying the school record
for longest win streak to open a season with the 1988-89 team. Following
the championship game Josh Edmonds, Billy Baptist and Mookie Pierre were
named to the All-Tournament team as were Central State's Cole Prophet
and Mesa State's Mike Dominguez. Central State won the consolation game
of the tournament 71-58 over Truman State.
In earlier action, it may have taken the Quincy University men's basketball
team a few minutes at the start of the game but in the end the #24
ranked Hawks rolled to another win in typical fashion as they cruised to
an 89-60 win over Truman State University at home in game two of the
Quincy University/Subway Holiday Tournament.
The game was tied at 17-17 at the 11:27 mark of the first-half when the
Hawks went on a 13-2 run to pull away from the Bulldogs. Andreas Coleman
started the run with a jumper in the paint while Josh Edmonds knocked
down a three pointer and Justin Brock added back to back baskets to
close out the run.
The Hawks extended their lead when up 35-28 with just under four-minutes
left in the half, they closed the half with a 10-0 run, taking a 45-28
lead into the break. Quincy rolled on with another big run, this time a
17-0 run early in the second-half, to put the game out of reach. Quincy
shot 58-percent as a team from the floor and committed just eight
turnovers in the contest. Billy Baptist led the way with 16 points while
Coleman came off the bench to score 12 points. Justin Brock finished
with 14 points and Josh Edmonds added 13 points and three steals.
Quincy improved to 9-0 on the season. In the day's first game Mesa State
defeated Central State University 78-68 to advance to the championship
game.
