The Lady Eagles shot 85% from the free throw line, topping Louisiana (1-6) by a 44-37 final score. Knox County (5-2) won their fourth consecutive varsity girls basketball game despite scoring only nine points from the floor during the second half.
The contest was a two or three point affair most of the way. This contest might have been the best game of the day from those seeking tight contests on the scoreboard. Both teams showed heart and effort. Quick guard play and ball pressure was on display. The more experienced Lady Eagles outperformed former LaPlata head coach Johnnie Wood's team in many ways.
Louisiana rebounded the basketball well and made plays to stay in the game. Knox County could not put enough points on the board to distance themselves from their Clarence Cannon Conference foe. Knox County got big free throws from Becca Mallett and Lorrie Peters down the stretch. The JWCC Rumble on the River contest was knotted at 31 all after three quarters.
Lorrie Peters scored a game high 17 points for Knox County. Becca Mallett and Stacey Leckbee were in double figures with ten points each. Chelsea Nichols led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points. Louisiana was 2-7 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and 8-15 overall from the line (53%).
Knox County's boys continued their steady improvement, whacking Brussels, Illinois by a final score of 59-35. The Eagles took their fourth consecutive victory, improving to 5-2 overall. Knox County ball pressure seemed to disrupt the Raider offense. Leighton McCabe led the Eagles with five of their 14 team steals.
The Eagles were able to somewhat counter the presence of 6'8" Raider center Ethan Sievers by limiting his team's possessions. The relatively inexperienced Eagles had their moments but played a strong overall game, especially in the fourth quarter. The Eagles closed on a 22-8 run.
Lance McMahon had another strong game for Knox County, scoring a game pacing 17 KCHS points. Post player Justin Reeves scored 14 points with nine boards. Lucas Tepen led Brussels with 14 points. Ethan Seivers scored ten Raider points.
